Witness: Voices from the Holocaust

Witness: Voices from the Holocaust by Joshua M. GreeneWitness: Voices from the Holocaust” is an edited compilation of transcripts from the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimony at Yale University. Many of the twenty-six witnesses included here speak for the first time of what they saw. The book’s raw narrative challenges readers to redefine such concepts as heroism and courage by juxtaposing accounts of Jews, non-Jews, a Hitler Youth, American prisoners of war, liberation soldiers, resistance fighters, a Jesuit priest and others. Their complex and often contradictory reactions to what occurred offer a contrast to accounts that romanticize resistance and survival.

“A book of searing and penetrating reality…the finest compendium of Holocaust memory I know.”
— Walter Reich, former Director, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum

“A work of extraordinary power.”
— Chaim Potok, author, The Chosen

“A riveting account.”
— Abraham H. Foxman, National Director, Anti-Defamation League
